Greg Carter
Greg was born in Kingston Ontario 27, 1963 to Barbra Joan Carter (nee Belwa, herself a Kingstonian and Richard Anthony Lynch Carter an Edmontonian. Both of Greg’s parents are from families of British immigrants and as described in an earlier paper consider themselves “Loyalists (i.e., very much supporters of the Monarchy as a stable and historically crucial part of Canada’s fabric)
Greg’s father is a retired professor of economics and it is due to his father’s pursuit of his career when his father transferred to the University Mannheim Germany (where Greg picked up a rudimentary knowledge of German and then a move to Cambridge, England at Cambridge University. . Greg followed in his father’s and, and grandfathers’ footsteps when he joined the Canadian Army at the age of 19 while living in England, deciding to take the path of an infantry officer Greg first found himself in 1982 at Royal Roads Military College in Victoria BC before transferrin g in 1983 to the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in Kingston Ontario (both Royal Roads and RMC were institutions also attended by Greg’s father. Greg graduated from RMC in 1986 with a
BA in History
1986 marked the start of the operational part to Greg’s military career as Greg’s first operational posting was to the Third Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), and it was with both battalions that Greg deployed overseas to Cyprus and Croatia on United Nations peacekeeping duties.[i]

Following Greg’s Army career, he decided on a career change when he accepted employment in the Government of Albert where he led the operation of the Provincial Operations Centre as part of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) an d then the director of Alberta Environment’s Emergency Response Team after which was the final crucial change in Greg’s employment history when Greg accepted employment as a supervisor in Enbridge In. in Edmonton. Greg’s responsibilities included the design and im0lementatio of Elbridge’s Training and Exercise programs for Enbridge’s pipeline system in North America.
Greg has been married to Leslie for 34years to Leslie (nee Dailey of Gananoque Ontario. They have 3 sons: Ben, (aged 24 years and a serving soldier, born in Pembroke Ontario while Greg was posted to Petawawa in 2 CMBG – see end note), Alex (age 28, a heavy equipment mechanic, boron in Winnipeg when Greg was posted to the second Battalion of the PPCLI) and Nick (age 30 and a lab Tech, born in Victoria when Greg was posted to the third battalion of the PPCLI) (a serving soldier, member of the Operations staff in 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade (2 CMBG) Headquarters as well as the officer responsible for Human Resource policy in the 5000 people strong 2 CMBG. Greg’s finished his posting at 2 CMBG AS THE Executive Assistant to the Brigade Commander Brigadier-General Rick Hillier.[ii]
Greg’s life and the lives of his family members changed abruptly and tragically in 2020 when Greg suffered a stroke after returning from a business trip. Then started 13 months of being an in-patient
between the ICU and NEURO Unit at the University of Alberta and then to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and then the Halvor Johnson Brain Injury Clinic in Ponoka Alberta before becoming an out-patient at the Glenrose where Greg went on long term Disability though still an employee of Enbridge.
Conclusion
While Greg was not initially expected to survive and partake in this journey but is determined to “make up go lost time “; indeed, always the soldier and rugby player, Greg’s goals reflect that at determination as he is determined to rejoin Enbridge as an “active employee with Enbridge and to play hockey with his youngest son and resume snowshoeing with “Equality Fitness. Greg frequently uses the phrase “the fight is NEVER OVER! It is Greg’s wish, recognizing the important work that WJS Canada does with other stroke-survivors that this message be passed onto WJS’ other clients. Greg will spend Easter with hi family in Jasper as The Fight NEVER ENDS![iii]”
Greg wishes to both thank and acknowledge the efforts of the many health care facilities including essential services provided by those professionals in Equality Fitness an WJS Canada where he has been fortunate to attend without whose efforts Greg would not have a story to tell- thank you (!) if you are a reader and a member of one of the. aforementioned organizations!
[i] e PPCLI was the same regiment of Rick Hillier would go on to become the Chief of the Defence Staff and the lead for COVID VACCINE distribution Greg’s father and one of Greg’s Grandfather’s. The PPCLI are primarily based in wester Canada. This important geographical distinction is important as it represents the gradual move of the Carter family from eastern Canada to Western Canada

Sarah and I (Patrick) were talking tonight about an upcoming trip to St Albert to visit my mother when the subject of our old dear friends Greg and Leslie came up. I googled you (as one does) and found this website. We are both so blown away by your amazing rehab which we know wouldn’t have been as successful without the support and love of Leslie and your family. We miss you both and hope that we can catch up in September when we head out to the Wild Rose Province. Best wishes — Patrick Weir & Sarah Bonner, your old 3VP friends.
